I agree, it is always better when you can have a team behind you to pick up your slack. It doesn't matter if people tend to learn counter skills and outside the box bar building when trying to 1v1.

PvX Wiki FTW. screw originality.

Nope sorry, wrong.
GW is an online multiplaying game. Or what scientists like to call a MMORPG.

1vs1 is more interactive than most PvE because most people just H/H everything. At least 1v1 has you interacting with other humans.

I personally have not done too much 1v1 but from what i have done, i can determine that it requires a level of critical thinking and strategy.
like "ok im up against a wammo and im an ele. Guess ill go [blurred vision] and snares.
or "hey im a ranger and im up against a derv. Guess ill go [crippling shot], but in case he is using [avatar of melandru] i might have to adjust my build

Dunno how this is critical thinking...

If there was a point to 1vs1, anet would have made a place exactly for that purpose. Don't forget HB, but there's REAL strategy to that knowing you have to look at things other than your skill bar. For the most part GW is a PvP game, where you make builds with other people and work together (i.e. GvG and HA probably the most played of all pvp), instead of sitting in your GH hoping you brought the right skills to achieve virtual bragging rights over someone who doesn't care.

btw if you call 1vs1 "interacting with other humans", im wondering what else you do...
ok well just because you are exclusively pvp doesnt mean that everybody else is. I used to pvp but then i got tired of all the people with puckered buttholes ragequitting, flaming, noobing, and e-peening. so now i am mostly PvE with the occasional AB for laughs. I only interact with my alliance otherwise i h/h everything.

And my point was that 1v1 is interaction with humans. At least more so than most of PvE. Because 1v1 can also be understood as HUMAN Vs HUMAN.

The examples i gave of building bars for 1v1 were very basic examples. the fact is that when you do 1v1 you have to take a look at your bar to try to set it to match multiple scenarios. Which does take critical thinking because you have to look outside the box to be able to counter multiple circumstances.

For example, a ranger relies on lots of conditions but has not one hex spell in his whole class. So going up against [avatar of melandru] would make him try to throw in a couple interrupts to prevent or look at a secondary profession to try to trump that.

It is a little more than just randomly getting lucky, it involves educated guesses, true but player skill has a lot to do with it as well.

I am going to go ahead and digress from this discussion because it is making me look like a die hard 1v1 junky which i am definitely not. Ive probably 1v1 maybe a dozen times. i was only trying to display a point.

I like my Dervish because it's one of the easier classes to adapt to whatever situation I'm in (in large part due to avatars). Although no derv builds are the absolute best at one specific thing (certain running builds and areas aside), I enjoy playing it because its versatile and doesn't need to be a cookie-cutter build if want to join a PUG (not saying you should want to, but it's an option).

If nothing else, they look cool.

i have a primival female dervish and i must admit at first i loved playing with a dervish. But after a while i was getin board and couldn't find a group with it in ha. Although they are very similar to a warrior and both classes are still good 2 use. Just up 2 the player reli if they want to create a dervish or a warrior.

[Attacker's Insight] sums up dervish pretty well. Their effectiveness should not be measured when under enchantments but when they rend enchantments off themselves as well. Sadly, Anet is too lazy to explore the options of the latter. They need to revamp the "...heal yourself [insert numbers] health." rubbish in Wind Prayers and add in something along the lines of "Your next [insert numbers] attacks interrupts target foe."

I use Zelaous Vow with my Dervish which allows for incredible spamming (infinite energy) and Deep Wound with Wearying Strike (heroes take away weakness fast [Mend Body And Soul, Foul Feast, Smite Condition, Recovery]). I also have a constant IAS/IMS with Whirling Charge/Dwarven Stability. Infact, Smite Condition actually adds to my DPS with the weakness applied after Wearying Strike.

Dervishes are beasts in PvE. They can also be quite useful in PvP, but due to other melee classes exceeding the capabilities of a Dervish, they are often discriminated against in high-end PvP. Even so, this should not stop you from playing one, as they are a very lovable class. (;

Is it better to run Mystic Sweep over Protector's Strike? Also, isn't it kind of annoying to run Flail, especially in HM, w/o a cancel stance? (assuming we're running SY!, scan, AoHM here)

D/P with go for the eyes are a great team build. Though having at least one P/D scyther on the team is recommended.
Orders Dervs are also very great phys support.

But other than those, I don't personally see dervs worth the slot

Its simple really. People CANT go around yelling for a derv because the dervish is usually always different for each player. A dervish can pretty much do anything and the people who play dervishes all like to put in whatever play style they prefer into the dervish. So Players cant yell WE NEED A DERVISH FOR (insert dungeon here) because they neverknow what they are going to get and it would probably be easier just to ask a charecter of the proper profession to get the job done.

EX: say you want a tank sure a dervish can do that easily but wouldnt it be easier just to get a warrior (who is meant to tank) to do it rather than inviting a dervish and having them ping their builds just so you can find out it isnt what you needed?

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. Yes it may be easier to assume a Warrior will tank more efficiantly than a dervish; however, I have seen some REALLY shitty warriors "tank" in my day.

I think it just goes without saying you shouldnt assume a person's ability to tank regardless of their class, rather than their ability to spell english correctly (and dervishes seem to do that more correctly than warriors do)*note: was not a take on "dervs are better!", it was meerly an observational stance*.

In the end, I still feel that Warriors and Dervishes are equally not needed anymore. I have played my warrior for 3 years now and havent seen a "need a warrior" in at LEAST 2.5 of those years, or since the Ursan nerf.
